FAQ
Why is it so expensive?
Octane Training offers small group training classes (no more than 12 students per class), which are led by trained coaches, and are carefully programmed to ensure safety and consistent results. The smaller setting allows for more individual attention and quality coaching. Our training program is periodized, meaning that it goes through various phases throughout the year... the classes are not randomized workouts designed solely to "kick your butt". We realize that you can attend many gyms in the area, or follow along with countless workout videos, to get a fiery burn in your muscles and work up a killer sweat. Our classes are geared for the individuals who prefer to follow an expertly designed and coached program for long term results, rather than short term benefits. Our students are truly getting personal training quality sessions at a mere fraction of the cost of one-on-one training. Workouts are available 6 days per week, which means classes are only $5 each, and yoga is included on top of that! It's a pretty amazing value, folks! ;)
Is it Crossfit?
While the Octane training room looks similar to a Crossfit box at first glance, our training methodology is not the same. We follow the principles taught by Strongfirst, which differs in technique and programming from the Crossfit method. Kettlebell training originated in Russia and was popularized in our part of the world by Pavel Tsatsouline, founder of Strongfirst. We follow Pavel's methods, who continues to teach the traditional Russian hardstyle kettlebell training.
I'm not sure I can keep up. Do I need to get in shape before I start?
Absolutely not! These classes are for everyone. We have students from all backgrounds and fitness levels, and our experienced trainers are here to help make sure each workout is tailored to suit your needs and abilities. These classes are designed to get you stronger, faster, leaner, and increase your cardiovascular fitness... you don't need to do this BEFORE you come!
I feel intimidated. What's the atmosphere like in class?
Classes are not a competition. The group atmosphere is supportive and encouraging, and will help motivate you to challenge yourself! You'll be amazed at how much you can accomplish when you stop trying to navigate training by yourself, join a group of others who are also working toward fitness goals, and are guided by an experienced trainer. Not only will the others in class help to hold you accountable, but they make your workouts far more fun! We sweat a lot in class, but we laugh a lot, too.
How many workouts per week should I attend?
This is definitely dependent on the individual, but we generally recommend that you start with 3 classes per week if you haven't already been doing similar training. How often you should train depends on how well you are recovering. If you are eating right, drinking plenty of water, and sleeping well, you will be able to recover properly and will be able to work up to more classes. During times when you are under high levels of stress, your recovery time will be longer and it may be wise to take more rest days. Working just as hard on your recovery as you do on your workouts (with good nutrition, sleep, and taking measures to properly deal with stress) means that you will be able to reach your goals more quickly!
Won't kettlebells hurt my back?
Kettlebell training will actually strengthen your back, improve your posture, and help to eliminate back pain. Kettlebells won't hurt you, but improperly using them can! If you have a pre-existing back condition, of course, you should get your doctor's approval before starting any program.
Still not sure if Octane is a good fit for you?
You can always set up a meeting to come in and let us answer all of your questions. If you haven't been in a gym in years (or ever!) and feel like you aren't ready to join in on a class, we can set up a one-on-one assessment with you to see where you are and to teach you the fundamentals so you'll be more comfortable in class. Or if the class option doesn't really appeal to you... read below!
Do you offer personal training?
Yes! One-on-one personal training is always an option, and if you have a friend or two who want to join you, we can also set up small group sessions that will be tailored to each of you. Just call or email us to get set up!
